Senior Mechanical Engineer

Your Job

DarkVision, part of Koch Engineered Solutions, is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of our state-of-the-art ultrasonic imaging technologies. This role presents an exciting opportunity to tackle unprecedented engineering problems where a first principles approach is essential for developing robust solutions.

Unique design challenges arise as we integrate our custom, high-resolution sensor assembles into products that must withstand some of the harshest conditions found in industry, including pressures up to 15,000 psi and temperatures reaching 150° C. As such, this role demands someone who is highly proficient in applying mechanical engineering principles to challenging problems, and also eager to learn and adopt the innovative techniques that DarkVision has mastered over the years.

The successful candidate will engage with every phase of the design process, from ideation through to scaled manufacturing handoff. Additionally, as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will steward engineering best practices throughout the organization and help mentor junior engineers to help them realize their full potential.

Our Team

If it moves, needs to survive extreme conditions, protects delicate electronics, or has specific material properties, the Mechanical Team will be involved. We’re collaborative, curious, and encourage taking big swings. We work closely with other engineering teams to produce thoughtful, innovative solutions to problems that don’t always have a clear answer.

What You Will Do

  • Carry out detailed design of mechanical parts and assemblies for use in our products, including electronics packaging, pressure vessel design, sensor carriers, dynamic structural elements, and fluid handling systems
  • Perform engineering calculations to assess system viability and performance of a system, including the use of numerical tools such as FEA when appropriate
  • Analyze mechanical assemblies to determine the appropriate level of tolerancing (including GD&T) required to obtain functional parts
  • Produce professional mechanical drawings of custom parts for external contract manufacturers
  • Collaborate with external contract manufacturers to source both custom and off-the-shelf components
  • Create professional assembly drawings, BOMs and other documentation to support our in-house manufacturing team
  • Leverage our in-house prototyping capabilities, including 3D printers and CNC machines, for rapid testing and iteration on new concepts and improvements
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering teams to gather cross-functional design requirements and communicate design interdependencies and tradeoffs
  • Assemble prototypes of new products or improvements to existing products, and support their testing and validation
  • Determine appropriate testing requirements for new devices and assist with designing custom test equipment
  • Occasionally travel to our field offices to support final testing and commissioning of devices prior to commercial deployment

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Engineering Physics
  • At least 5 years of experience as a design engineer in one of the above disciplines
  • Professional experience in creating 3D models and assemblies using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or Creo
  • Experience designing electromechanical assemblies, such as electronics packing and thermal management systems
  • Understands the design considerations for various manufacturing methods such as CNC machining, 3D printing, and laser/waterjet cutting
  • Experience designing sealing solutions for various applications, including the use of mechanical seals and gaskets
  • Professional experience utilizing materials science knowledge to select suitable materials for specific applications
  • Experience creating appropriately toleranced 2D drawings to outsource custom parts fabrication
  • Experience interfacing with external vendors to procure custom parts
  • Hands-on experience with assembling and testing prototypes, using benchtop tools including multimeters, function generators, and oscilloscopes

What Will Put You Ahead

  • 8+ years of experience as a mechanical design engineer
  • Masters degree in a related field
  • Experience with the design of high pressure and temperature systems
  • Experience with basic microcontroller programming (Arduino, etc.) to aid in rapid prototyping
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or other technical programming languages for data processing and analysis
  • Experience working on imaging technologies, in particular ultrasonic NDT/NDE
  • Experience working in the O&G industry, particularly upstream and midstream

General Salary Range

For this role, we anticipate paying $120,000 to $160,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
